Artist in Residence – Draft Concept

The Artist in Residence program awards sponsored residencies to  local, national, and international artists each year. Residencies of four to ten weeks include flexible studio space, chef-prepared meals, comfortable housing, and travel and living stipends when available. Residents become part of a dynamic community of artists participating in the SloCA other programs, allowing for exchange and collaborative relationships to develop within the artist community on campus. Artists selected for this program are at all stages in their careers and work in all media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, film, video, new media, installation, fiction and nonfiction writing, poetry, dance, music, interdisciplinary, social practice, and architecture.

Program Period

  • Application period for 2017 program will begin in 2016. 2017 Program runs March to December, 2017.
  • 2017 Awardees will be notified by November 1, 2016. Thank you for your patience during the selection process.
  • Each Program year is divided into three seasons: Spring, March – May; Summer, June – August; and Fall, September – November.

Program Goals

  • To support and invest in individuals at the cutting edge of their fields, whose work will impact the cultural landscape at large. To provide these artists with the support and opportunity to take their work to the next level and to explore and experiment
  • To bring artists and thinkers into a dynamic community of local, national, and international artists: a professional network of creative practitioners and thinkers
  • To encourage artists to explore their ideas and work within the context of the the San Luis Obispo County geography
  • To bring an international community of artists to the SLO area and create opportunities for engagement and cross-cultural exchange with local artists and audiences

Program Details

  • Fully sponsored 4- to 10-week residencies with optional monthly stipend of $500
  • 100- to 2000-sq.-foot studios

Eligibility

  • Artists not currently actively enrolled in an academic program
  • Former SloCA Artists in Residence may not apply within five years of previous Residency
  • All other Alumni of SloCA Programs are eligible to apply for the Program at any point

Selection Criteria

  • Merit of past work
  • Readiness to engage with and benefit from the residency experience at SloCA (see program goals)
  • Potential to develop creative practice and impact the community at SloCA and beyond

Selection Process

  • SLOCftA staff reviews applications to ensure completion and eligibility
  • Submissions are reviewed by a jury of knowledgeable and esteemed artists and arts professionals
  • The jury evaluates each artist’s materials and selects finalists
  • Finalists are invited to present their work in a 20-minute, in-person, phone, or videoconference interview to determine the final award selection

What You Need To Apply

A full application includes the following:

  • Resume or curriculum vitae
  • Letter of interest, outlining your specific interest in working at SLOCftA and how program participation will affect your practice
  • List of three references and email addresses
  • Documentation of recent work (see specifications below for guidelines according to discipline)
  • $45 processing fee
  • Please note, the application period will open on Tuesday, April 22nd. A link to the Slideroom application will be available on that date.

**Artist collaboratives should apply together by submitting ONE application per group, specifying the number of individuals on the application form. For live-in Artists in Residence, SloCA can accommodate no more than three total artists in a collaborative group.

Documentation
Please select from the following list materials appropriate to your practice. The category headings are guidelines; please submit whatever type of materials best represent your work.

Visual (painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, installation, conceptual)
Submit up to 12 images, or up to 30 minutes of video and/or DVD.
Images must be accompanied by an image list with title, date, size, media, and, where applicable, conceptual intent.

Writing (poetry, fiction, nonfiction, playwriting, screenwriting)
Submit up to 20 pages of poetry, 30 pages of prose or one to two full-length plays/scripts.

Performance / Dance
Submit 30 minutes of video, along with any other material that adequately describes your work.

Film / Video / New Media
Submit up to 30 minutes of video.

Music / Sound
Submit up to 30 minutes of audio and/or video.
Please note: the first 10 minutes will be used for primary review.

Arts Professionals (art writers, administrators, and curators)
Submit sufficient material to evidence the breadth of your work and interests, including reviews, essays, and catalogs.

Architecture / Environment
